How we run class

Checks, routines and class size

What our instructors have completed, and the routines every class follows.

  • Ages 8 to adult

Staff checks and training

  • Background checks
  • CPR and first aid
  • Mandated reporter training

Safety routines

  • Door and bench

Children are dropped off and collected at the dojo door. Parents wait on the bench by the viewing window, which looks onto the whole mat.

  • Shoes, nails and jewelry

Shoes stay at the door. Nails are short, hair is tied back and jewelry comes off before class.

  • Light contact

Partner work is slow and set in steps. There is no contact to the head in any children's or teen class, and the staff and sai are used only in kobudo, in forms and slow drills with a partner.

  • Class size

Children's and teen classes hold up to 12 students, adult and kobudo classes up to 16, and the family class up to 10.

Family policies

What families ask before a first class.

Photos of your child

We ask your written permission before we share any photo of your child, on this site, in newsletters or on social media, and you can change your answer at any time. We never put a child's name with a photo, and the photos on this site are examples until we replace them with our own.

Watching class and belt tests

Parents, partners and friends are welcome on the bench by the viewing window in any class. Please keep your voice low while the line bows in and out. A belt test happens at the end of a regular class: stay and watch if you like, and keep your phone on silent.

What to wear and bring

A plain t-shirt and loose pants for a first class, with bare feet on the mat, hair tied back, short nails and no jewelry. A white uniform is fitted after the first class, and the front desk explains where it comes from and how to wash it.

When to stay home

Stay home with a fever, a stomach bug or anything that spreads, and come back once you feel well. If someone is hurt in class, we stop and call a parent or the emergency contact right away. Tell the instructor in person if something is sore, and keep health details out of the contact form.

Drop-off and pickup

Children are dropped off and collected at the dojo door. A child waits inside until a parent or an adult named at joining comes in, and we ask for ID from anyone we don't know. A teen may leave alone with a parent's written note.

Closures for weather and holidays

We close on federal holidays and for the week between sessions. When the county schools close for weather, we close too, and we text families the afternoon before and post a note on the front door.

Leaving the program

Tell us in writing when you plan to leave. We ask for thirty days' notice, and the month in progress is the last one billed. If you are moving with a posting, tell us early and we will go over the dates with you.

Phones and filming

Phones stay on silent and in a bag during class. Filming in class happens only with the instructor's say-so, and never of other families' children.
